What are my construction costs?
The most commonly asked question is, “How much will my home cost per square foot?” This is probably the most difficult answer for a home builder because it depends on several variables. The most common variables are the differing features/upgrades our customers decide to include in their new home, the topography/slope of the land where the site is located and the fluctuating commodity prices (lumber, concrete, etc.). Nonetheless, J. Craig Homes can guarantee a competitive contract quote on your custom built home with the latest features and amenities.
What is the timeframe to build my new home?

Depending on the size of the home, this can vary. Typically, a home with 2400 to 2600 square feet of living space will take 4 to 5 months to complete. Homes in the 3000+ square feet range may take 6 to 7 months to complete, depending on the features included. This is not a cookie cutter process but we are efficient and work hard to complete your home in a timely manner.
Is J. Craig Homes licensed and insured?

Yes! With an investment of this magnitude, you can’t afford to take any chances with a home builder that is not. J. Craig Homes carries general liability and builder’s risk insurance. We are licensed by the State of Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board (www.hblb.state.al.us) and our license can be referenced online. Also, anyone that I hire to perform work carries insurance and is licensed, too. Not only is this the proper way to do business but it also signifies that we have made a commitment to do things the right way - which is the operating philosophy at J. Craig Homes. (Note: Always ask to see a home builder’s license and insurance, this is simple information that a high quality home builder has easily available.)
What does the J stand for in J. Craig Homes?

It's funny, this is a very popular question. It may seem confusing but my full name is James Craig Williams. I've always gone by my middle name, Craig, so not be confused with my father who is also named James. No, you don't need to call me J. Craig (my wife asked me this when we first met, she too was confused when she saw my business card).

Do you build with my home plans or the builder’s home plans?

As a custom homebuilder, this is usually one of the first questions I am asked when prospective customers are first inquiring about hiring me to build a home for them. “Do you have home plans I can choose from or do I need to bring you my own home plans?” The simple answer, I can do either. That is the core distinction that separates the category of custom home builder from a big company tract home builder. Custom home builders are more flexible in the ways they operate and in what they are able to construct. Generally, a customer that likes the quality and style of my homes, but does not have a plan picked out can do one of two things (this is the most common scenario I find). First, we decide on size and which attributes and amenities you desire in your new home. We can then browse through my collection of home plans to try to find a match. Or, we can commission an architect to design a home based on your specific criteria or alter a plan from my collection to met your needs. I can recommend an architect or we can use one that you may already know.

The other scenario I see is the customer that has their dream home picked out, already has a copy of the plans, but needs to find a builder to construct the home. This is not a problem. Actually, this is when you hear the phrase “competitive bidding” often used in residential construction. Essentially, this is what I am doing. Looking at your plan and giving you the best contract price I can in order to earn your business.
